Nowadays, the range of betting is very wide and betting is possible in almost any sport and competition. Betting involves a large amount of money and therefore attracts manipulation of competitions and other forms of crime, such as money laundering. Betting companies cooperate extensively at the international level to detect and combat manipulation of sports competitions related to betting.
In Finland, Veikkaus supervises the manipulation of sports competitions with regard to its own betting objects. Veikkaus follows the international betting market on a daily basis and particularly monitors big changes in odds. These may be key findings related to manipulation of sports competitions and are reported by Veikkaus to FINCIS. Veikkaus uses this information as a basis for its selection of events to bet on to ensure that no suspicious matches end up in the selection.
International co-operation is important in the fight against manipulation of sports competitions. Betting-related manipulation of sports competitions is prevented, for example, through co-operation within the United Lotteries for Integrity in Sports (ULIS).
