Research activities

Through extensive and multidisciplinary research, FINCIS produces information that can be used to create a safer and more sustainable sports culture. In addition to general ethical issues in sports, the research topics reflect the content and goals of our activities and tasks as well as the information needs of our stakeholders.

FINCIS’s Research review on ethical issues in sports (in Finnish only) indicates that relatively little research has been carried out on the ethics of sports. In research, it is important to recognise the need for information about various ethical phenomena in sports. The goal of coordinating, developing and conducting new surveys and studies is to provide the entire sports community, decision-makers and other parties of society with new information. Research is conducted in co-operation with universities, research institutes, sports stakeholders and expert organisations from other industries, among others. Parties in the sports community, such as the Olympic Committee and the Paralympic Committee and sports federations are important partners for us. FINCIS shares and disseminates information on ethical themes in sports, for example through its own publication series.

Research themes

FINCIS’s research interests include general sports ethics, anti-doping activities, combatting the manipulation of sports competitions and spectator safety. FINCIS promotes these themes and conducts research and surveys related to the ethics of sports in Finland together with various parties. If you have information needs, research ideas or cooperation project suggestions concerning ethical issues in sport, you can contact FINCIS’s Research Manager.

FINCIS’s publishing activities include

  • research
  • surveys
  • publication series

In 2017, FINCIS set up its own publication series to share and deliver information about ethical themes in sports. Through studies and reports on sport ethics, new information for decision-making processes and general public discussion is produced. The purpose of these activities is to establish a more sustainable and safer sports culture.

The reports and reviews of the publication series provide comprehensive information about the latest research in sports. The purpose of the content based on multidisciplinary international and national studies is to increase sports stakeholders’ awareness of sport ethics.

The publications are targeted at sports stakeholders, organisations, decision-makers and authorities, but given the wide variety of themes, there is plenty to read for parties not involved in sports as well.

Anti-doping research

Multidisciplinary research is an essential tool for the continuous development of anti-doping activities. The aim of FINCIS' anti-doping research is to gain new information and insight of the global state of anti-doping research, thus sparking further research in Finland.

Research on manipulation of sports competitions

Combatting the manipulation of sports competitions is a key theme in FINCIS' research activities. For a long time, research into competition manipulation has primarily approached the phenomenon through corruption. Only in the past decade has the research on manipulation of sports competitions started to form a separate field of research.
